  22. The speaker is Dr. Paul Solomon, Asst. Professor at the School
  23. of
  24. Information and Library Science, UNC-Chapel Hill.
  25.  
  26. The topic for this session is an overview of human-computer
  27. interface
  28. design for online information systems. Dr. Solomon will give us
  29. background on the subject and some details about the work he has
  30. done.
  31.  
  32. The importance of human-computer interface design increases as
  33. the
  34. number and diversity of new users of online information systems
  35. and
  36. sources grows daily. These users require software tools that
  37. will
  38. help, not hinder, their necessary work.
  39.  
  40. Networked information discovery and retrieval (NIDR)
  41. applications on
  42. the Internet such as WAIS, the Internet Gopher, archie, and
  43. WorldWide
  44. Web have emerged to serve a user community seeking access to
  45. distributed, multiform infobases as well as bibliographic OPACS
  46. (online pubic access catalogs). Developers of these
  47. applications and
  48. succeeding generations of NIDR tools need to consider interface
  49. design
  50. as well as functionality issues in order to deliver efficacious
  51. products.
