- I raise books.
-
- Every day, I get up at six, before they are awake.
- I set out bowls of ink and plates of sawdust.
-
- The books sleep on shelves. As the early morning light
- shines into the room, they start to stir. I watch them
- spread their covers and stretch, then glide down to the
- floor.
-
- The little paperbacks peep and tussle for their share.
- The formal hardbacks have a careful, intricate pecking
- order. The trade paperbacks are my favorites; they are
- friendly and sociable books. The comics, flapping their
- brightly coloured covers, tip and fall and tumble. A few
- lordly art and reference books wobble about, almost unable
- to move.
-
- After they finish their meal, I whistle sharply. On that signal,
- they all rush over to me. I examine my flock, picking up each
- one, dusting them, examining them.
-
- A few are ready every day. I leave the rest of the books
- to play, and take the ripe ones with me.
-
- This is the saddest part; I cuddle the books close, and they
- look at me trustingly. Quickly, I kill them, with as little
- pain as I can.
-
- The sun is well up now, and it's time for my breakfast. Eggs,
- bacon, and a pot of coffee, and I examine my haul. I settle
- into my easy chair, and open my new books. They are shiny and
- crisp, well fed and full of words. I am proud of myself and my
- flock. Soon, I'll sell them to the wholesaler in the city.
-
- It's a good living.
