  25. I'd provisionally agree that hypnosis is not a *unique* mental state, 
  26. being very close in my experience to lucid dreaming.  I've experienced 
  27. hypnosis once, and though sceptical, even hilarious about it at the time, 
  28. realized even when I was in a light hypnotic state that I was indeed in a 
  29. trance.  It has nothing to do with "social compliance" as I understand it.

  31. It was because of this convincing experience of hypnosis that I hired 
  32. a hypnotist to help my 80-year-old mother deal with her excruciating 
  33. pain when she was dying of cancer.  It worked.  And I'll be happy to 
  34. explain to anyone exactly how I knew it worked if you want to contact 
  35. me via e-mail.

  37. I found the hypnotist through the national association that corresponds 
  38. to the AMA.  He was a Congregationalist minister who discovered a 
  39. talent for using hypnotism when he helped his 18-year-old daughter 
  40. through her death from a brain tumor.  He had then for the past 20 
  41. years worked with the local VA hospital with patients either terminally 
  42. ill or those who experienced chronic pain.

  44. Several hypnotists I contacted said they would not work with the 
  45. dying because these people were beyond consciously dealing with 
  46. suggestion..

  48. Hypnotism is an effective means of dealing with certain conditions, 
  49. and has absolutely nothing to do with moronic credulism or an 
  50. eagerness to be "socially compliant."
