  24. I haven't really been following this thread, but this claim strikes me
  25. as a bit strong based primarily on my knowledge of both Lewis and Van
  26. Inwagen and on conversations with them both independently and together.
  27. Peter and I were both at Rochester in the early days of Counterpart
  28. Theory, and David came to give a symposium (I think in '69/'70).  Peter
  29. then went on to Syracuse the next year I believe, and I subsequently
  30. gave a paper on essentialism in modal logic and CT at a meeting of the
  31. Creighton Club which (as I recall) he was administering at the time.

  33. So through a number of conversations and debates I certainly acquired
  34. the impression that Peter grasped quite clearly the use of counterparts
  35. in favor of trans-world identity.  Of course, you might argue that my
  36. understanding was deficient as well, but at least this was never pointed
  37. out to me by Lewis.

  39. Consider this simply as a testimonial for a old friend I haven't seen
  40. in years, but terms such as "bullshit" and "doesn't even understand"
  41. just don't square with my experience.
