- One of the factors which graphically showed up in the Minamata
- episode in Japan is that cats came down with the effects of
- Mercury poisoning before people did because the cats ate the remains
- of fish which had concentrations of Mercury in their flesh as a
- result of bioaccumulation, or biomagnification. Thus, the cats
- became inadvertant, and unwilling, indicator species. A macabre
- case of a "miners' canary."
