- I wasn't arguing that hunter-gatherers were at all times throughout
- all of human existence at equilibrium with the environment. I was
- pointing out that *when* they were at equilibrium, that can't be
- explained by ecosystem limitations alone -- something cultural must
- be happening as well.

- In fact the megafaunal extinctions strengthen this argument, don't they?
- Because they happen around first appearance of modern humans and then
- they stop. That is consistent with the idea that an equilibrium was
- achieved and thereafter maintained not too long after first appearance.

- The point of the beaver example is that it is hard to see how anything
- other than cultural stabilization could explain it.
