- CD players use a laser diode to read the disk. The player detects the
- presence of a disk by simply checking to see if it can read data. No
- data == no disk. Unfortunately, these laser diodes have a lifespan of
- four or five years. Tired diode == no data. Guess what?
-
- (It may be possible to crank up the drive current on the laser diode
- but this will only postpone the inevitable. See back issues of R-E
- maybe three years ago for details...)
