- Kenneth, CODEC stands for "COder/DECoder". It is a generic term for an
- analog-to-digital/digital-to-analog converter that also does a code conversion
- on the digital to reduce the number of bits that must be transmitted for a
- given signal level. (The idea is to use most of the "dynamic range" of the
- digital code for values close to zero, and just use a few values for extreme
- values of the analog signal. This makes for high fidelity on low-level
- signals, which is where the real information is in telephony.) They are
- generally used in telephony applications.
