-
- Although we don't quite reach the high end of scopes etc, we do run the
- gaumut from very simple to complex computer controlled scopes. Cheap
- to very complex DMM's etc. For home/most service requirements, in our
- estimate, KISS.
-
- We have some esoteric measurements we have to do where accuracy is very
- much required. These procedures take a lot of time and fancy equipment.
- For those cases, we roll out the humongous hardware, roll up our sleeves,
- and prepare to spend some time really taking data.
-
- Over the weekend, I did some trouble-shooting on an older stereo amp.
- (Damn, Knight Kit filter caps tend to dry out after 25 years or so.)
- I didn't need precision measurement technics, all I needed was a go-
- no-go indication of was the power supply ripple .05 volts, .5 volts,
- or 5 volts.
-
- Some other suggestions.
-
- In circuit transistors testers. - Sometimes they do, sometimes they
- don't. We've got a couple, but they are not often used.
-
- Component signature analyzer. - Probably the most important device
- after a scope and dmm. Especially wonderful tool for servicing a
- stereo, (or any other unit,) where you can compare good/bad circuits.
-
- Capacitor analyzers. - Can get fooled by parallel circuits. Simplest
- analyzer is a box of assorted caps, 2 clip leads, and insulated fingers
- (for higher voltages.)
