- combo or a chevy/TH700 combo. Either will have a locking converter.
- It might be that your TPS of MAP is bad, causing the converter to lock

- I will guess that with the 98 you have a chevy 305 w/TH700; put a
- diagnostic light on the lock signal lead from the computer and see if
- it is a lock/unlock problem.
