- Hi all,
-
- This is the summary of the responses I received as a result of my
- posting few weeks ago. I was trying to choose A/V Pro-Logic receiver and
- it came down to Onkyo TX-SV70PRO and Technics SA-GX910.
-
- First let me thank everyone who took time to respond. I got many
- valuable suggestions and comments and only one flame (pretty mild and it
- was useful too).
-
- 1. Overall quality.
-
- Most people felt that Onkyo makes much better receiver than Technics in
- general. I got many more responses from Onkyo owners than from Technics
- owners, but they all have been very positive, both regarding sound
- quality and reliability. No horror stories about either model. One point
- was that SA-GX910 was top of the line for Technics, whereas TX-SV70PRO
- is middle of the line for Onkyo (at basically the same price).
-
- 2. Importance of S-Video inputs (Technics has them, Onkyo doesn't).
-
- Most respondents agreed that it doesn't matter very much because there
- are not that many S-Video sources. Some pointed out that it makes a
- difference if you make your own video recordings on S-Video camcorder.
- But even then you need S-VHS VCR and TV with S-Video input.
-
- 3. Importance of digital in/outs (Technics has them, Onkyo doesn't).
-
- I got very little response to this question. It seems that for digital
- recordings (say from CD to DAT) it doesn't matter that much because you
- can connect them directly (assuming they both have digital connectors,
- otherwise it's a moot point anyway). I am not sure what else you can do
- with this capability. One respondent suggested that it could be very
- useful if the receiver was capable of re-clocking the signal to
- different clock rate (say from 44.1KHz to 48KHz). I don't know if
- Technics does that but I think not.
-
- 4. Power
-
- > SA-GX910 is more powerful (370W vs. 315W) but TX-SV70PRO's
- > power is better distributed, with the center channel the same as
- > front channels.
-
- As it was mentioned many times in this group, almost all respondents
- said that center channel power equal to front channels is very important
- for Pro-Logic. Onkyo was recommended despite having lower power rating.
-
- 5. Class A amp ?
-
- > The spec for SA-GX910 says that this is Class A amp. What does
- > it mean ? Is it important ?
-
- This question led to a separate thread in this newsgroup, so I won't add
- anything. Let's just say that nobody believed that Technics is a true
- Class A amplifier.
-
- That's all folks. Thanks again and Merry Christmas!
