  13. You have to decide yourself, if you need really 200W. 
  14. Here some examples:
  15. e.g., you have a speaker with a SPL of 90 dB/W/m. (SPL = sound pressure level)
  16. To sense, that music is louder, you have to power up for 3 dB.
  17. To get music louder for 3 dB, the amplifier must send double power to
  18. the speakers as in the moment before.

  20. So here is a list of SPL and W according to the example:

  23.    2W ....  93 dB
  24.    4W ....  96 dB
  25.    8W ....  99 dB
  26.   16W .... 102 dB
  27.   32W .... 105 dB
  28.   64W .... 108 dB
  29.  128W .... 111 dB

  31.  512W .... 117 dB
  32. 1024W .... 120 dB

  34. I suppose, a HIFI-speaker with a SPL of 90 dB/W/m can reach a max. SPL of
  35. about 110 dB/W/m before beeing destroyed by overpowering. At least, 120 dB
  36. will let your ears tingle. You see, Watts are not all. 10 W with the speaker
  37. described above will be about 100 dB, and this is much noisy in a normal
  38. room. 
  39. The initial SPL of a loudspeaker is according to the drive units built in,
  40. and not to forget - to the enclosure type.
  41. Compact (closed) boxes have normally a very low initial SPL (about 80 dB/W/m)
  42. bassreflex boxes are normally a little bit better (about 90 dB/W/m),
  43. transmissionline boxes have also low SPL,
  44. only horn boxes have a very high SPL (about 100 dB/W/m and over).

  46. Look at my situation: my self-designed transmissionline box, using FOCAL
  47. drive units, is working very fine and gets a SPL of 87 dB/W/m. My ampifier 
  48. (Benytone X-Calibre) has 200W, but I don't really need them, when I'm playing
  49. very noisy, funky, jazzy, groovy, it only requires about 30W up to 100W.
  50. This is quite enough. Or will you blow your brain out through your ears?
  51. Then you can point to your left ear with your finger and say to your friends:
