-
- (Edited description of posters idesa on the decoding of Dobly Stereo
- encoded sound).
-
- The term "Pro Logic" is used to give weight to the methods used to
- decode the multi-channel sound information of the recorded sound. The
- term also usually indicates steering ligic is used to enhance the
- reproduced sound. The encoded sound is refered to as Lt and Rt or
- Left total and Right total. ("Total" indicates the surround and center
- channel information is included).
-
- Some decoders use analog matrices and some use digital methods. It
- all boils down to the fact that the Dolby Stereo recording method has
- inputs for Left, Right, Center and Surround. That's it.
-
- What ever decoding method is used:
-
- The Left(Lt) and Right(Rt) signal is used as is.
- The Center channel signal is derived as a sum of the left and right channels.
- The Sub-woofer output is a band limited copy of the center channel.
- The Surround channel is the difference of the Lt and Rt
-
- As I noted eariler the term Pro Logic usually indicates that steering
- logic is used. The steering logic generally monitors things like the
- surround channel activity and when the sould level exceeds a threshold
- the level of the surround channel is increased slightly to "enhance"
- that effect until it falls below the threshold.
-
- The above paragraph only describes the operation of the steering logic
- as applied to the Surround Channel.
-
- This is a simple explanation of the system as used. I have made no
- attempt to explain all of the permutations.
-
- The term _Dolby Stereo_ is the correct industry standard term to
- describe sound that is intentionally recorded with that
- characterization......
