  18. The term "Pro Logic" is used to give weight to the methods used to
  19. decode the multi-channel sound information of the recorded sound.  The
  20. term also usually indicates steering ligic is used to enhance the
  21. reproduced sound.  The encoded sound is refered to as Lt and Rt or
  22. Left total and Right total.  ("Total" indicates the surround and center
  23. channel information is included).

  25. Some decoders use analog matrices and some use digital methods.  It
  26. all boils down to the fact that the Dolby Stereo recording method has
  27. inputs for Left, Right, Center and Surround.  That's it.

  29. What ever decoding method is used:

  31. The Left(Lt) and Right(Rt) signal is used as is. 
  32. The Center channel signal is derived as a sum of the left and right channels.  
  33. The Sub-woofer output is a band limited copy of the center channel.
  34. The Surround channel is the difference of the Lt and Rt 
  35.  
  36. As I noted eariler the term Pro Logic usually indicates that steering
  37. logic is used.  The steering logic generally monitors things like the
  38. surround channel activity and when the sould level exceeds a threshold
  39. the level of the surround channel is increased slightly to "enhance"
  40. that effect until it falls below the threshold.

  42. The above paragraph only describes the operation of the steering logic
  43. as applied to the Surround Channel.

  45. This is a simple explanation of the system as used.  I have made no
  46. attempt to explain all of the permutations.

  48. The term _Dolby Stereo_ is the correct industry standard term to
  49. describe sound that is intentionally recorded with that
  50. characterization......
