- If you think grammar is a series of proscriptive rules you're wrong. Grammar
- ranges from core rules that are basic to the communication of sense, to rules
- of style--like the placement of some commas and dashes. In final analysis,
- grammar is a tool the writter uses to communicate. The more you know about
- your tools, the better craftsman you are. Of course, it depends on what sort
- of product you intend to produce. A painter who knows nothing about color
- blending or brush strokes may produce a painting he likes by throwing
- paint-dipped tennis balls at a canvass.
-
- Of course, after fifty years, the artist who is remembered is the one who
- demonstrated skill with his medium, as well as an exploration of its limits.
