- RE: Support for the arts is control
-
- Canada seems to have a reasonable system of seperating government from the
- arts they fund. I'm not sure about Canada Council, but the Alberta
- Foundation for Literary Arts was a body of established authors which
- distributed government funds. The sitting boardmembers elected the next
- year's members and each board set their own criteria for grant awards.
- Boardmembers recieved no money for their part in all this. (Though some
- argued their favorite psychophants did).
-
- If Canada's literary funding is guilty of anything, it's encouraging
- "Frontier Stories", "immigrant stories" and other "cultural" literature and
- ignoring genre work. Apparently they don't believe genre literature can
- express any Canadian Character.
