- Subject: Re: Junior Firefighter programs
- Lines: 45
-
- I am a officer of a rural VFD of about 50 members running fire and rescue. We
- have a very simple Jr. program in my dept. The juniors are allowed to do
- anything a regular member can except enter an active fireground until mop-up.
- Our definition for an active fireground for the juniors is anyplace you may
- need an SCBA ( IC's descretion). Jr's are allowed to work brush fires,
- safety/exposure lines, MVA's, pumps and EMS calls (no patient contact). Our
- idea behind the Jr program is simple... have them trained so when they turn
- 18 they are ready to go. During trainings the JR's can do anything, including
- live burns as long as they are closly supervised by a trainer.
-
- The JR's have a simple "contract" with the dept:
- 1: No lights, sirens or any type of emergency responce to the scene.
-
- 2: School grades must be maintained at C or better. No school no F.D.
-
- 3: Cannot ride on a First out vehicle if there are full firefighters
- without a seat.
-
- 4: Must report to IC on arrival at a scene.
-
- 5: No entry to the active fireground.
-
- These are the main points. The JR and his/her parents must sign this contract.
- Our lawyer and insurance company have agreeded to these rules and they have
- worked out quite well. The rules are enforced by all members and any violation
- results in a 90 day suspension or dismissal. Most of our JR's that have become
- full members are now playing key roles n our dept. 2 have become engineers,
- a couple EMT's and a few diehard firefighters.
-
- Our dept has been real lucky with weeding out the JR's just in it for the show,
- too bad we can't do that with full members as easily.
-
- PS. NEW MEXICO POV's are alowed to use LAS. Red- required on all emerg vehicles
- Blue- towtrucks and as a secondary to emerg vehicles, Amber- anybody and
- the fabulous road dept. White- emerg vehicles.
