- There is a big difference in the hardness of different brands of glass.
- I learned this the hard way and then did the research AFTER the fact :-(
- At 250,000 miles, I had the windshield replaced because of sand etching.
- No stone pitting, no stars (stone chips) and no cracks. I had a cheap
- no-name glass installed. Glass is glass, right? WRONG. In the 50k miles
- since, it is more pitted than the glass it replaced, has starred a couple of
- times and awhile back when I nearly got some air under the wheels,
- the damn thing broke right down the middle.
-
- A little research informed me that the glass formulation varies AND
- the degree of hardening varies. PPG is about the hardest. There
- are a couple of other major brands that are almost as good but
- my memory is slipping. I don't know how to rate OEM glass in this
- equation.
-
- If you got a good name brand aftermarket, you should be in good shape.
- Otherwise....???
