  29.  Amnesty International is deeply concerned at reports of continuing
  30. death threats against Maria Teresa Jardi, Director of the
  31. Departamento de Solidaridad y Defensa de los Derechos Humanos de
  32. la Arquidiocesis de Mexico, Department of Solidarity and Defence of
  33. Human Rights of the Archdiocese of Mexico.  In the last death threat,
  34. received on 5 December 1992, Maria Teresa Jardi was told "...now you
  35. will have to say goodbye to lots of people.  I advise you to do it
  36. before Christmas night, because you will be leaving soon, and not just
  37. from Mexico..." ("...ahora vas a tener que despedirte de mucha gente. 
  38. Te recomiendo lo hagas antes de la noche de navidad, porque ya te
  39. vas y no precisamente de Mexico...").  Previous death threats had
  40. warned her to stop her human rights work.  It is believed that her
  41. investigations into human rights violations which have suggested the
  42. involvement of law enforcement agents may be behind the threats.

  44. On 3 November 1992, following the first death threats, the Camara de
  45. Diputados de Mexico, Chamber of Deputies, requested that an
  46. investigation be opened into the threats.  The Procuraduria General de
  47. la Republica, Republic's Attorney General's Office, commissioned a
  48. special investigation and provided a security escort for Maria Teresa
  49. Jardi and her family.  President Salinas met with Maria Teresa Jardi
  50. to discuss the situation.

  52. BACKGROUND INFORMATION
  53.  
  54. Several other human rights activists have received death threats in
  55. recent years.  In May 1990, Norma Corona Sapien, a human rights
  56. lawyer and president of a human rights commission in the State of
  57. Sinaloa, was gunned down by unidentified gunmen.  At the time of her
  58. assassination she was investigating the murders of four people, who
  59. had reportedly been abducted and tortured by the federal judicial
  60. police.  In March 1990, she had announced that she was receiving
  61. death threats because of these investigations.  It was suggested that
  62. government agents were behind her death.

  65. telegrams/telexes/faxes, express and airmail letters in Spanish, English
  66. or in your own language:

  68. - expressing deep concern that despite the government's efforts to
  69. protect Maria Teresa Jardi and her family, she continues to receive
  70. death threats;

  72. - urging that further measures are taken to clarify the identity of the
  73. perpetrators and to bring those responsible to justice.
