  24. European Parliament Demands Freedom for Cuban Poet
  25.  
  26. On Dec. 17, the European Parliament in Strasburg asked for the
  27. "immediate" release of the poet Maria Elena Cruz Varela, arrested
  28. for political dissidence. The full meeting in Strasburg approved a
  29. resolution proposed by liberal Spanish deputy Carlos Gasoliba, in
  30. which he denounced the situation of political prisoners in Cuba.
  31. The European Parliament will ask the foreign ministers of the
  32. European Community to mediate with Cuban authorities to improve
  33. the situation of those arrested, and to ask the Cuban government

  37. Castro Condemns Somalia Invasion

  39. Cuba's President Fidel Castro condemned the multinational military
  40. intervention in Somalia, and particularly the participation of the
  41. US, which he said aims to "resolve the problem of hunger with
  42. cannons." Castro's statement was released by the Cuban news agency
  43. Prensa Latina on Dec. 17. He pointed out the contrast between the
  44. US's supposed concern for the hunger suffered by the people
  45. Somalia, while at the same time it continues to impose the embargo
