- WASHINGTON, Dec. 18 -- The leader of the National
- Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) today asked President Bush to grant
- administrative leave to all non-essential federal employees on
- Dec. 24.
- "From Operation Desert Storm to the relief efforts for Hurricane
- Andrew, federal employees have proven their dedication to helping the
- nation in times of need," wrote NTEU President Robert M. Tobias in a
- letter to Bush. Tobias said granting the paid leave would "show your
- appreciation for your employees' dedication and hard work" and "would
- be a most appropriate and welcome gesture."
- Tobias added that federal employees "continue to perform at high
- quality levels despite often difficult budget constraints."
- "Federal employee productivity increased by 2.8 percent from 1989
- to 1990 while productivity in the non-farming business sector
- decreased by 0.3 percent (according to the most recent data available
- from the Bureau of Labor Statistics)." Tobias also wrote.
- NTEU is the largest independent federal employees union,
- representing more than 140,000 federal workers in the Internal
- Revenue Service, Customs Service, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and
- other federal agencies.
