  32. The UN Human Rights Center in Geneva has decided to accept Indonesia's 
  33. outrageous invitation to host an Asia-Pacific human rights workshop in 
  34. Jakarta on January 26-28, 1993!
  35. Invitations have already been sent to governments and human rights experts.

  37. I am appealing to every solidarity group and every non-governmental 
  38. organization around the world to launch a campaign of protest and a 
  39. denunciation of this decision by the United Nations.
  40.  
  41. Such a seminar was to have been held in December 1991, but it was delayed 
  42. because of the November massacre in Dili. The human rights situation in East 
  43. Timor and Indonesia has not improved.
  44.  
  45. I make a special appeal to NGO's of the Asia-Pacific region, including 
  46. Indonesians, to oppose this bizarre gathering which makes a mockery of human 
  47. rights in Indonesia and in East Timor.
  48.  
  49. Ask the U.N. Human Rights Center in Geneva if they are planning to hold 
  50. human rights seminars in Yangon (Rangoon), Myanmar (Burma), Tienanmen 
  51. Square, Guatemala City, and Belgrade (Serbia).

  53. Protest notes must be in the strongest possible language. Human rights 
  54. experts who accept the invitation to Jakarta must also be denounced publicly.

  63. must be urged to condemn the human rights situation in East Timor and in 
  64. Indonesia, and to distribute the report of the Special Rapporteur on 
  65. Torture, the latest UN Human Rights Subcommission report on East Timor and 
  66. information from Asia Watch and Amnesty International.
