- {From PEOPLE'S WEEKLY WORLD, December 12, 1992}
- EDITORIAL
- DON'T RECOLONIZE SOMALIA
-
- Somalia presents grave dangers to the U.S. and the entire world.
- No one can be against feeding starving Africans, and this is one
- reason why the United Nations resolution authorizing the U.S. to
- use military force to do so passed unanimously, with the support
- of China, India and Zimbabwe. But this was, in fact, horrible
- political manipulation on the part of the U.S. and the U.N.
-
- When Somalia became independent in 1960, large numbers of Somali
- nomads continued to range across neighboring Ethiopia and Kenya.
- Unifying them in a "Greater Somalia" set Somalia against the
- entire Organization of African Unity. When Gen. Mohammed Siad
- Barre and his clan came to power in 1969, there was a chance
- Somalia could be oriented in a progressive direction. But in
- 1977, with assurances of support from Egypt and the U.S. Barre
- broke with the USSR and invaded "western Somalia" (Ethiopia),
- only to suffer bloody defeat.
-
- U.N. Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, one of the
- architects of the Camp David agreement, was then No. 2 man in the
- Egyptian foreign ministry. He is no stranger to conniving with
- Washington.
-
- And Washington today needs Somalia, as a base in the oil-rich
- Middle East and Africa. Having just been forced out of its Subic
- Bay base in the Philippines, U.S. imperialism sees Somalia as a
- choice morsal.
-
- President Willian McKinley told the U.S. in 1899 why he decided
- to keep the Philippines: "I got down on my knees and it came to
- me we had a duty to help our little brown brothers." Disgusting
- hypocrisy and imperialism go together. We still have time to stop
- both.
-
- Feed the hungry everywhere, including here. No re-colonization of
- Africa. Bring U.S. troops home and let U.S.-funded African troops
- from the OAU provide security in Somalia.
