  18. DON'T RECOLONIZE SOMALIA

  20. Somalia presents grave dangers to the U.S. and the entire world. 
  21. No one can be against feeding starving Africans, and this is one 
  22. reason why the United Nations resolution authorizing the U.S. to 
  23. use military force to do so passed unanimously, with the support 
  24. of China, India and Zimbabwe. But this was, in fact, horrible 
  25. political manipulation on the part of the U.S. and the U.N.
  26.  
  27. When Somalia became independent in 1960, large numbers of Somali 
  28. nomads continued to range across neighboring Ethiopia and Kenya. 
  29. Unifying them in a "Greater Somalia" set Somalia against the 
  30. entire Organization of African Unity. When Gen. Mohammed Siad 
  31. Barre and his clan came to power in 1969, there was a chance 
  32. Somalia could be oriented in a progressive direction. But in 
  33. 1977, with assurances of support from Egypt and the U.S. Barre 
  34. broke with the USSR and invaded "western Somalia" (Ethiopia), 
  35. only to suffer bloody defeat.

  37. U.N. Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, one of the 
  38. architects of the Camp David agreement, was then No. 2 man in the 
  39. Egyptian foreign ministry. He is no stranger to conniving with 
  40. Washington.

  42. And Washington today needs Somalia, as a base in the oil-rich 
  43. Middle East and Africa. Having just been forced out of its Subic 
  44. Bay base in the Philippines, U.S. imperialism sees Somalia as a 
  45. choice morsal.

  47. President Willian McKinley told the U.S. in 1899 why he decided 
  48. to keep the Philippines: "I got down on my knees and it came to 
  49. me we had a duty to help our little brown brothers." Disgusting 
  50. hypocrisy and imperialism go together. We still have time to stop 
  51. both.
  52.  
  53. Feed the hungry everywhere, including here. No re-colonization of 
  54. Africa. Bring U.S. troops home and let U.S.-funded African troops 
  55. from the OAU provide security in Somalia.
