  19. LONG LIVE PALESTINE!

  21. This month marks the fifth anniversary of the Intifada, the mass
  22. Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation of the West Bank
  23. and the Gaza Strip.
  24.  
  25. The Palestinian struggle is one of the most difficult national
  26. liberation struggles in the world. The Palestinians are a people
  27. whose state was taken away. They have no rear base from which to
  28. organize, and they're up against formidable enemies: U.S.
  29. imperialism and its garrison state Israel. For these reasons, the
  30. whole world took notice when this rising of the entire
  31. Palestinian population began.
  32.  
  33. What has happened in the past five years? Israel used its
  34. billions of dollars in U.S. aid to isolate the West Bank and Gaza
  35. economically, take away the Palestinian people's source of
  36. livelihood, confiscate their land, club them into submission, and
  37. jail as many as possible. Yet the Intifada continues.
  38.  
  39. In the past five years the socialist camp, which gave much-needed
  40. aid to the Palestinian struggle, collapsed. Washington organized
  41. its imperialist allies to invade Iraq, inflicting a body blow on
  42. all the oppressed people of the Middle East, especially the
  43. Palestinians. Yet the Intifada continues.
  44.  
  45. This Arab people's struggle for self-determination and
  46. sovereignty not only goes on, but a joint leadership and tighter
  47. coordination between Palestinian groups has helped raise the
  48. level of the struggle in recent months.
  49.  
  50. Many in the progressive movement have responded to the collapse
  51. of the Soviet Union and the socialist camp by losing faith in the
  52. struggle for social change. But the Intifada stands as an
  53. inspiration and a beacon, shedding light on the fact that
  54. oppression always breeds resistance. And a determined people can
  55. and will fight until they win.

  57. This fifth anniversary of the Intifada is a good time for
  58. progressive and working people here to renew their support for
  59. the Palestinian cause and demand that the U.S. get out of the
  60. Middle East and stop funding Israel.
