- LET THE HAITIANS IN--NOW!
-
- If President-elect Bill Clinton wants to make good on one of his
- early promises, he now has the perfect opportunity. Let him
- intervene to stop the shamelessly racist oppression of Haitian
- refugees--now.
-
- Two hundred twenty-two HIV-positive Haitian refugees and their
- dependents are being held prisoner at Camp Bulkeley, located in a
- remote corner of the U.S. naval base at illegally occupied
- Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
-
- The detainees, among 40,000 people who fled Haiti following the
- bloody overthrow of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide by the
- Haitian military, were tested for HIV against their will. Under
- the cruel and racist interdiction policy of the Bush
- administration, the great majority were forcibly returned to
- Haiti. The HIV-positive Haitians are held incommunicado in
- conditions of abject squalor and brutal repression.
-
- Several are expected to die within the next several months.
- Medical facilities are completely inadequate. Conditions are so
- bad that already two Haitians have tried to commit suicide.
-
- Washington is refusing to allow four critically ill Haitians to
- enter the U.S. for treatment. An Immigration spokesperson said,
- "They're going to die anyway, aren't they?"
-
- When the Haitians protested against the horrendous conditions at
- Camp Bulkeley, the Navy responded with a display of jet fighters,
- tanks, helicopters and attack dogs. The Haitians justifiably
- characterize themselves as prisoners of war, and their prison as
- a concentration camp.
-
- Clinton has promised to reverse Bush's policy on Haitian
- refugees. The Haitians have no time for promises. It's time for
- action now: full asylum for all Haitian immigrants, and medical
- care for those who are ill.
