- *SUPPRESSED VIDEO OF US BOMBING OF IRAQ
-
- The videotape of former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark's
- factfinding mission to Iraq during the US led aerial bombardment
- is now available. This film, titled "NOWHERE TO HIDE", documents
- widespread bombing of civilian objects in Iraq, contrary to
- international law.
-
- John Alpert, 12-year veteran of NBC News and winner of 7 Emmy
- awards, assisted in making the film and was fired when he
- offered it to NBC. The footage was taken to CBS, where
- Evening News executive producer Tom Bettag agreed to run
- excerpts. Bettag was promptly fired. None of the major
- networks ran any of the tape despite the fact that they
- had no reporters in Iraq at the time.
-
- You can get copies of the tape in Canada from:

-
- VIDEO ON WAR TAX RESISTANCE
-
-
- "PAYING FOR PEACE: War Tax Resistance in the United States" is a
- half-hour look at people who refuse to pay the portion of their
- federal income tax that would go to the military, in many cases
- re-directing the money to organi- zations that work for peace and
- social causes.
-
- "PAYING FOR PEACE" features interviews with Americans working in
- movements for peace and social justice. Among those interviewed are
- Brian Willson, a war tax resister and Vietnam veteran who in 1987 was
- run over by a train while blocking munitions shipments at a Concord,
- California naval weapons depot; Reverend Maurice McCrackin, who in the
- early 1950's was sentenced to jail for war tax resistance; Ernest and
- Marion Bromley, a couple who have lived largely under the taxable
- income level in order to avoid contributing to military spending; and
- Juanita Nelson, an early civil rights organizer who was the first
- woman to spend a night in jail for war tax resistance. Several people
- featured in "PAYING FOR PEACE" have been war tax resisters for more
- than forty years.
-
- The program was videotaped in California, New York, Virginia, Ohio,
- West Virginia, and in Nicaragua. In addition to interviews with war
- tax resisters, it includes a TV news story about a married couple
- whose home was auctioned for back taxes they had refused to pay for
- the military. A former attorney is also interviewed about the risks
- and possible consequences of war tax resistance.
-
- "As an introduction to non-violent resistance, PAYING FOR PEACE
- advances some irrefutable arguments."...Phil Berrigan & Liz McAlister;
- Jonah House
-
- "PAYING FOR PEACE poses a serious challenge to everyone interested in
- ending the culture of militarism."...Blase Bonpane, PhD; Director, Office of
- the Americas
-
- "I thought it was very well done, very well photographed and
- presented. I would have liked it to be twice as long."...Reverend
- Richard McSorley; Director, Center for Peace Studies, Georgetown
- University
-
-
-
- "PAYING FOR PEACE is an excellent introduction to war tax
- resistance, an act of civil disobedience with a long and honorable
- history in the U.S. For people who are angry about paying so much for
- weapons and war, this video gives a solid overview. It introduces
- viewers to active resisters and deals with the hardest question of
- all--fear of the IRS."...Ruth Benn, War Resisters League
-
- PAYING FOR PEACE is an excellent tool for education and organizing
- during "tax season". First released on April 15, 1991, it is being
- offered now at the reduced price of $25.00 postage paid for the VHS
- format. (Other formats available upon request; write for prices.) To
- order, send check payable to "PFP Video" to: PAYING FOR PEACE; PO Box
- 5946; Takoma Park, MD 20913.

- Note 48 MOTHERS PEACE VIDEO
- edshaff@web.UUCP 11:01 pm Feb 14, 1992
-
- Subject: MOTHERS PEACE VIDEO
-
- I RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING EMAIL MESSAGE FROM TED SHAPIN, ORANGE,
- CALIFORNIA. ED SHAFFER.
- -----------------------------------------------------------------
- [This letter, that I received, announces the availability of a
- documentary video from a Hiroshima peace group. Ted.]
-
- February 1992.
- Mothers Peace Movement
- 4-2, 27 Ohte-machi
- Naka-ku, Hiroshima City
- Japan 730
-
- Since we are informed that you are actively working for world
- peace, I am writing to you on behalf of a peace group formed by
- mothers and volunteers in Hiroshima.
-
- In spite of your hard work and the efforts of many others working
- for peace in different parts of the world, we are greatly disap-
- pointed to still see wars and conflicts breaking out incessantly,
- and we wonder why war must constantly be repeated on earth. When
- we asked ourselves what we as mothers could do to promote peace,
- we realized that those who start wars and those who produce
- weapons have mothers, and that we could contribute to peace by
- getting all the mothers in the world united hand-in-hand and by
- raising our children to respect lives before anything else.
-
- We recognize that human lives are not the only ones being destroyed
- by war; the environment is also being threatened. Nuclear arms are
- proliferating all over the world and are now a hundred times more
- powerful than the atomic bomb which killed 200,000 lives in
- Hiroshima. The film that depicts the disastrous effects in
- Hiroshima caused by the atomic bomb shows us about the tragedy of
- war in the most accurate and clearest way.
-
- In the hopes of avoiding such catastrophes in the future, our
- Mothers' Peace Group would like to send you a video tape (English
- script) which shows what happened in Hiroshima at the time of the
- atomic bombing and its aftermath. Please read the enclosed leaflet
- on the film, and if you think that this video could be used in
- your peace activities, write to us and we will send you a copy.
- We would appreciate it if you could send us the signatures,
- impressions and messages of the people to whom you show the file.
- We have a VHS version in English and Japanese, and a PAL version
- in English, which we can send to you. Could you let us know if you
- want a video tape in other languages for our information. We who
- bear and bring up life are responsible for leaving our beloved
- children with a safe and beautiful world and intact dreams of
- future promise. We want to share this commitment with you and
- work together for a better world.
-
- Sincerely,
- [signed] (Mrs.) Kazuko Ichikawa
- [From the leaflet:]

- Hiroshima: A Mother's Prayer; A-Bomb Documentary Film
-
- Early in the morning, an elderly woman bows in prayer before the
- Cenotaph in the Peace Park. What can the deep wrinkles in her
- clasped hands tell us?
-
- In the forty-five years since the Bomb fell on Hiroshima, it's
- survivors have struggled back to life. Yet the Bomb continues to
- cast its shadow across the lives of its victims.
-
- Perhaps even more than others, it is mothers who nurture life and
- who confront nuclear weapons, agents only of destruction and
- death. For this reason, we have chosen to present the tragedy of
- the Bomb through he eyes of mothers... mothers who lost their
- children in the tragedy of Hiroshima. In this film, we see the
- sorrow, the anger, the suffering, and the prayers of mothers;
- mothers who have lived and continue to live in Hiroshima.
-
- Upon the completion of this new A-bomb documentary film, it is our
- sincere hope that viewers will reflect seriously on the meaning of
- Hiroshima for us who live today.

-
- Announcement: New Video on World Government
-
- The Educational Film and Video Project is distributing an important
- video on world governance.
-
- "Toward a Governed World" , a 27-minute documentary produced by
- Telecosm, "is done with high professionalism and is as rewarding
- as it is important", according to Norman Cousins, former editor of
- the Saturday Review.
-
- This highly informative documentary proposes that the abolition of war
- and injustice is possible only through the establishment of a
- democratic global government --a federation of nations. That
- government would have the power to outlaw war, alleviate pover ty, and
- protect the planet's environments. The video illustrates these bold
- solutions through a creative format --historical foo tage and graphics
- are combined with questions posed by people on the street to 3
- prominent world government advocates. Also inc luded throughout are
- statements by such well- known advocates of world government as Albert
- Einstein and Justice William O. Doug las. A good introduction to this
- important concept.
