  26. tegucigalpa, dec 11 (ips) -- the mayor of the northern honduran
  27. town of yoro, dario urbina, who had distinguished himself as a
  28. defender of the human rights of indigenous people, was shot by
  29. unknown assailants thursday night, according to news media
  30. reports.

  32. he was taken to hospital but died friday morning. the killers
  33. escaped.

  35. in september urbina had told reporters that he could identify
  36. the killers of indigenous leader vicente matute, who was
  37. murdered in may.

  39. at the time of his murder matute was involved in litigation
  40. trying to recover the tribal lands of the tolupanes, or xicaques,
  41. group of indian nations.

  43. mauricia castro, secretary-general of the xicaques tribes
  44. federation, told ips that mayor urbina's murder was related to
  45. the statements he made in september about the killers of chief
  46. matute.

  48. ''urbina said he knew who the killers of matute were,'' said
  49. castro. ''that's the reason they murdered him, too.''
  50.  
  51. she said urbina had accused well-known cattle ranchers and
  52. military people of the yoro area of masterminding matute's
  53. assassination.

  55. she has now asked president rafael callejas and the
  56. parliament to launch a thorough investigation on the murders.

  58. ''the real problem is,'' she said, ''that for many decades
  59. some ranchers have been tryinmg to steal the lands belonging
  60. to the xicaques.''

  62. eleven indian tribal groups inhabit honduras, representing
