- Title: HONDURAS: MAYOR WHO DEFENDED INDIANS' RIGHTS MURDERED
-
- tegucigalpa, dec 11 (ips) -- the mayor of the northern honduran
- town of yoro, dario urbina, who had distinguished himself as a
- defender of the human rights of indigenous people, was shot by
- unknown assailants thursday night, according to news media
- reports.
-
- he was taken to hospital but died friday morning. the killers
- escaped.
-
- in september urbina had told reporters that he could identify
- the killers of indigenous leader vicente matute, who was
- murdered in may.
-
- at the time of his murder matute was involved in litigation
- trying to recover the tribal lands of the tolupanes, or xicaques,
- group of indian nations.
-
- mauricia castro, secretary-general of the xicaques tribes
- federation, told ips that mayor urbina's murder was related to
- the statements he made in september about the killers of chief
- matute.
-
- ''urbina said he knew who the killers of matute were,'' said
- castro. ''that's the reason they murdered him, too.''
-
- she said urbina had accused well-known cattle ranchers and
- military people of the yoro area of masterminding matute's
- assassination.
-
- she has now asked president rafael callejas and the
- parliament to launch a thorough investigation on the murders.
-
- ''the real problem is,'' she said, ''that for many decades
- some ranchers have been tryinmg to steal the lands belonging
- to the xicaques.''
-
- eleven indian tribal groups inhabit honduras, representing
- more than 300,000 people. (ends/ips/tr/sp/np/hr/jrd/in/it)
