- RAMYA VICTORY AT HAND
-
- The travails of the Arab villagers of Ramya, located next to
- the Israeli town of Carmiel, may be coming to an end. In June
- 1991, although the Ramya residents hold titles to their land, they
- received an eviction order issued by the District Court in Haifa to
- make way for Soviet Jewish immigrants. ADC assisted in a massive
- international campaign, conducted in cooperation with the Ramya
- Solidarity Committee.
-
- Although that eviction was put on hold thanks, in part, to
- the international campaign, recently the villagers received another
- eviction notice. The Ramya Solidarity Committee contacted ADC
- Outreach Director Larry Ekin who helped draft a letter of endorsement
- for circulation to various national and local groups, and an
- action alert transmitted through the North American Coordinating
- Committee network. The letter received endorsements from peace
- groups, solidarity organizations, academic associations, church
- representatives, and a number of Jewish organizations played
- key roles in soliciting support.
-
- In late October, the US State Department informed ADC, and
- the Ramya Solidarity Committee confirmed, that agreement may be
- near. Israeli Police Minister Shahal intervened to halt the
- eviction notice and agreed to mediate a solution.
-
- Sources close to the Ramya villagers indicated they were
- "cautiously optimistic," and expressed their appreciation for
- the very strong support that was generated for their cause
- from non-governmental organizations around the world.
