- CAMBODIA
- A UN camp in Cambodia has come under attack by the Khmer Rouge for
- the first time. The incident comes amidst a string of violent
- attacks by the KR.
-
- Just a few days ago, the UN base camp for electoral, police and
- military components came under fire during a KR rocket attack on a
- nearby commune. The district UN supervisor said the shells were
- aimed deliberately at the camp, moved two kms from the registration
- site for safety. A senior KR commander from another division told
- him he had also been ordered to fire on the camp.
-
- No one was injured but the next day a message was sent from the KR,
- ordering the electoral team to leave.
-
- The incident follows a series of attacks and increased
- mobilization of KR guerrillas in north-central Cambodia. (R.
- Australia 12/13)

- CHINA
- Under a program to convert many of its military plants to civilian
- production, China says it would welcome foreign investment in its
- nuclear industry.
-
- The official China Daily newspaper quoted the director of planning
- of the China National Nuclear Corporation as saying his country
- would welcome all types of investment in its nuclear industry. He
- said that last year, civilian production in his company made up 54%
- of its total value of $420 million, and the proportion would exceed
- 80% soon.
-
- Reuters news agency says an easing of tensions with Russia and the
- other Republics of the former Soviet Union, a renewed friendship
- with India, and a stress on military high technology has thrown
- much of China 's weapons makers into chaos. The agency says the
- defense industry is one of the country's biggest employers and much
- of its production is concentrated in already depressed regions in
- the north and east.
-
- China first exploded a nuclear bomb in 1964, and announced last
- year that it would join the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.
- Little is known outside China about the extent of the country's
- nuclear arsenal. (R. Australia 12/13)
