- Indigenous Peoples Ignored by UN
-
- The indigenous peoples of the American continent accused the
- UN of abandonment, disdain and disinterest. Luis Marcas, an
- Ecuadoran indian who attended the meeting of the Commission for
- Coordination of Indigenous Organizations and Nations of the
- Continent, said that "the United Nations is making a joke of us."
- On the day of the inauguration of the International Year of
- Indigenous People in the UN on Dec. 10 "only 39 [UN]
- representatives attended the opening meeting. It was a meeting
- among us, the indigenous peoples, and they didn't invite us even
- to take a meal," said Marcas.
-
- Marcas represents the Confederation of Indigenous Nations of
- Ecuador, CONAYE, whose membership is made up of 4,500 indians.
- "We're looking for autonomy and self-determination, but we think
- the UN represents other interests," added Roberto Nancucheo,
- coordinator of the Machupes indians in Argentina. Nancucheo also
- spoke of the common aim of the 80 million indians on the
- continent, and emphasized the 13 indian peoples in Argentina,
- with their respective languages and customs, despite the fact
- that the government does not want to accept them." The Machupes
- are found in Argentina and Chile; they do not recognize the
- current territorial divisions between the two countries.
-
- "We were dependent on Spain and now we're dominated by
- people whose ancestors came from Europe," said Nancucheo. Some
- 1,500 indians attended the UN meeting and the participants
- complained that they received no attention from the media.
-
- "These UN meetings have been the result of our struggle to
- have our rights respected," said Marcas. The next indian
- Commission meeting will be held in February, 1993 in Mexico City.
- The work of the indigenous people in New York City is supported
- by James Corejo, Rocio Velandia and Carlos Eden, members of the
- coordinating committee of the 500 Years of Resistance. (edlp
