- Nicaragua Continues to Seek US Aid
-
- This week Nicaraguan president Violeta Chamorro once again
- initiated a diplomatic offensive to get the US government to
- release promised financial aid. Chamorro said on Dec. 13 that she
- will send Antonio Lacayo, Minister of the Presidency, to
- Washington, DC to ask President Bush for additional financial
- assistance. Lacayo also plans to explore the possibilities of aid
- for 1993 under the Clinton administration. Although the Bush
- administration had already approved $190 million for 1993, $50
- million for 1992 -- out of $104 million promised -- is still being
- withheld, due to the lobbying of conservative US senator Jesse
- Helms, who supports Nicaraguan conservatives in their objections
- to Chamorro's so-called co-government with the Sandinistas.
- [Fifty-four million dollars was recently released to help Nicaragua
- appease some of its creditors]. Nicaraguan General Assembly
- president Alfredo Cesar has threatened to boycott the president's
- attempt, with the support of Nicaraguan conservative
- deputies.(edlp 12/14/92 from AP)
