  24. Nicaragua Continues to Seek US Aid
  25.  
  26. This week Nicaraguan president Violeta Chamorro once again
  27. initiated a diplomatic offensive to get the US government to
  28. release promised financial aid. Chamorro said on Dec. 13 that she
  29. will send Antonio Lacayo, Minister of the Presidency, to
  30. Washington, DC to ask President Bush for additional financial
  31. assistance. Lacayo also plans to explore the possibilities of aid
  32. for 1993 under the Clinton administration. Although the Bush
  33. administration had already approved $190 million for 1993, $50
  34. million for 1992 -- out of $104 million promised -- is still being
  35. withheld, due to the lobbying of conservative US senator Jesse
  36. Helms, who supports Nicaraguan conservatives in their objections
  37. to Chamorro's so-called co-government with the Sandinistas.
  38. [Fifty-four million dollars was recently released to help Nicaragua
  39. appease some of its creditors]. Nicaraguan General Assembly
  40. president Alfredo Cesar has threatened to boycott the president's
  41. attempt, with the support of Nicaraguan conservative
