- GUATEMALAN TROOPS HARASS INDIGENOUS PEOPLE
-
- On Dec. 9 the Communities of People in Resistance (CPR) in
- Guatemala denounced the "constant harassment" by army troops
- against indigenous populations displaced by the violence in the
- jungle areas of the northeastern part of that country. Indigenous
- Leaders Eliseo Lope, Paula Ros, Carlon Tun and Marcos Ramirez said
- at a press conference in Guatemala City that on Nov. 29 army
- troops attacked two small towns in Ixcan, Quiche, along the border
- with Mexico, some 300 miles from Guatemala City.
-
- Meanwhile, Rigoberta Menchu is in Oslo, Sweden, to receive her
- Nobel Peace Prize. Francis Sejersted, president of the Nobel Prize
- committee, said "may your prize serve to renew the peace talks in
- Guatemala." (edlp 12/10 from AFP)
