- Clinton and Bentsen
-
- Clinton is selecting Texas Senator Lloyd Bentsen for the powerful
- post of Secretary of the Treasury. You may remember him. In 1988,
- Democratic Presidential candidate Michael Dukakis chose Bentsen
- as his running mate. That move was a direct slap in the face to
- Jesse Jackson, whom many felt deserved that opportunity because
- of his strong popularity, not to mention the fact that selecting
- Jackson would have acknowledged the importance of the African
- American community.
-
- The move backfired on Dukakis, who lost the support of workers
- who were interested in at least some semblance of progressive,
- anti-racist politics in the U.S. presidential race. Bentsen, of
- course, never batted an eyelash about insulting Jackson. In that
- respect, he shares some kinship with Gore, who acted as former
- New York City Mayor Ed Koch's racist pit bull in going after
- Jackson during the state's 1988 primary.
-
- Now, Clinton is giving Bentsen, an acknowledged friend of the big
- banks, another opportunity to serve the White House. And serve it
- he will.
