- EL SALVADOR: DEC. 15 DEADLINE FOR "FINAL" SETTLEMENT
-
- December 15 is the deadline for the guerrillas of El Salvador's
- Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) to turn over all
- their weapons, as agreed in a United Nations-brokered "peace"
- settlement last January.
-
- As part of the deal, some 200 notorious military officers are
- supposed to be "retired" from service--including the minister and
- vice minister of defense and a large portion of the top military
- brass. The infamous Atlacatl Brigade was officially disbanded in
- late November, but none of its members have been dismissed from
- the service.
-
- The FMLN has demanded that before the deadline the Armed Forces
- give a "clear accounting" of some 10,000 guerrilla weapons which
- were seized in the course of the war. The rebel force worries
- that these weapons could be used by death squads with direct
- links to the Armed Forces. They point out that in November 1989
- the death squad used AK-47s to massacre six Jesuit priests, their
- housekeeper and her daughter. They most likely seized these
- weapons from the guerrillas.
-
- The Defense Minister and other top officials have been implicated
- in these killings and many others.
-
- Some rebel military leaders have refused to turn in their weapons
- until there is more concrete evidence of compliance by the
- government side to the terms of the peace agreement.
