- In emacs 18.59 info, node Search Changes, one can read:
-
- The most important change in incremental search is that RET now
- terminates a search, and ESC does not. [ ... ]
-
- (This change is somewhat of an experiment; it might be taken back
- by the time Emacs 19 is really released.)
-
- Please, don't take it back! The thing I most hate in emacs is that
- you must hit ESC to terminate a search. One time over two i hit
- either a RET, one of the arrow keys, or one of the PgUp, Home and so
- on keys. Since I use a vt100, those keys send a sequence beginning
- with ESC: the search is terminated and the rest of the sequence is
- inserted into the buffer. Sometimes I don't even notice that until I
- get a compilation error!
-
- I keep making this error even though I have used emacs for more than
- two years now and I use it daily.
-
- Thanks.
