  16. Since you asked, I still have a .357 Ruger bought for home protection
  17. about 10 years ago after coming home and finding a message on my
  18. answering machine that said "I'm gonna kill you, Al.  Tonight."
  19. I didn't have a clue who the caller was, or why anyone would want
  20. me dead.  The Fairfax County policeman who showed up seemed to think
  21. it was a high-school prank, and seemed put off that I bothered them 
  22. about it.  I got the impression that he didn't want to be called
  23. again unless there was a body involved.

  25. So the next day I bought a 9mm from a friend, and for a couple weeks
  26. I slept with it loaded within reach of my bed.  After a couple trips 
  27. to a local pistol range, I traded the 9mm back to my friend for the
  28. Ruger because .357 ammo was less expensive and I wanted to get in 
  29. enough range shooting to be able to use the weapon if I had to.

  31. No one ever showed up.  To be honest, I didn't expect any problems,
  32. because I hadn't done anything to warrant such a threat.  But crazies
  33. do exist (does the name Manson ring a bell?) and a death threat
  34. directed at me personally was serious enough that I didn't want 
  35. to risk not being able to protect myself in case it wasn't a prank.
  36. I didn't want to be in the position of waking up at 4am with someone
  37. crawling in through a window and having the police tell me they'll
  38. be here in 15 minutes.  This is not meant to knock the Fairfax Police,
  39. nor any police department.  They have to allocate their limited
  40. resources to the most serious problems, and there's a lot of problems.

  42. If this hadn't happened, I probably still wouldn't own a gun and
  43. I'd be wondering why some of these people think guns are necessary.
  44. But there's nothing like a practical exercise in self-preservation
  45. to form one's opinions, eh?  (What's that they say about a conservative
  46. being a liberal with experience..?)
