- We've recently installed Morningstar PPP on one of our main
- Suns, with the intention of running fairly extensive PPP/SLIP
- traffic.
-
- However, during testing with SLIP from a remote machine, I'm
- running into peculiar problems: The higher the remote interface
- speed, the more damaged packets are received at the remote
- machine. The interface speed at the central host (a Sun IPX)
- remains at 38400bps; at 9600bps at the remote host, everything is
- received in perfect condition; at 19200 there are a number of
- damaged packets; at 38400 ... forget it.
-
- Now, then, the funny thing is that this only occurs during
- _reception_ of _compressed_ TCP at the the remote machine.
- During transmission from the remote host, or if compression is
- disabled, things are fine at any speed.
-
- This leads me to belive there must be a timing/interrupt problem
- in the version of SLIP at the remote machine ... in particular as
- any other kind of high-speed serial line activity takes place
- with no errors whatsoever. OTOH, there's no particular load on
- the remote machine, svr4mon shows around 11% CPU during reception
- at 38400 ... the machine (actually my own) is a 33MHz '486
- running Consensys V.4.0.3, the SLIP was ftp'ed from Dell (I'll
- buy a UNIX from them any day now) labeled revision 1.4.1.1
- 92/05/22; the problem occurs with both the standard asy driver
- and SAS 1.25 ...
-
- I'll summarize, please respond to bilse@dkuug.dk .
-
- Regards,
