  17. in any event.  Re. the problem, I thought it would beg the question to
  18. re-post the problem one day later; I figured the bandwidth would be too
  19. much, especially when folks could just type 0 (in my reader, anyway) to
  20. get to the original article.  Frankly, before I proceeded, I thought
  21. about what would offend me more: re-posting the problem, or just sup-
  22. plementing it with new information.  After some deliberation, I decided
  23. it would be much less "whiney" to do the latter.  Sorry you disagree.

  29. Yes, thanks, that much I am aware of, which is why I suggested awk in
  30. the problem.  Actually, someone a few hours ago was kind enough to
  31. mail me about 8 lines of script that has reduced my task to less than
  32. half of what it was.  That is, what he sent showed me how to approach
  33. the math formulas of awk, and applied them to this situation -- which 
  34. is what I most needed.  I'm very grateful.

  36. 2) awk can be learned in no time using just the man pages.  I know, that's
  37. : how I learned it. I never heard of awk six months ago.

  39. I do envy you your sagacity.  I posted after spending about 1.5 hours
  40. poring over the man pages and 6 enigmatic pages in a Unix book I have.
  41. Couldn't make hide nor hare of those man pages -- at least insofar as
  42. doing math.
