  10. I intend to use vi for some text editing which will have to be
  11. done in German. The problem is that I can't get vi to recognize
  12. German umlauts (8 Bit chars). The shell recognizes them fine but
  13. when I type them in vi, it echoes the escape sequence back rather
  14. than the proper German umlaut.

  16. Is there a way to configure vi so that it will properly
  17. recognize 8 bit characters (ie. display the correct character
  18. rather than the  escape code)?
