  10. We have an IBM RS/6000 model 520 system with an IBM 8mm tape drive attached
  11. (along with other SCSI disk drives enough to use up all SCSI unit numbers on
  12. the controller in case it makes any difference).  Recently this 8mm drive
  13. began complaining most of the time about bad tapes (Specifically the infamous
  14. "Media Failure..." notice).  At first I replaced the tape with a new one, but
  15. after doing that 3 times and cleaning the drive 3 times also, I began to
  16. suspect something else was the problem.  I replaced the whole tape drive with
  17. another one from another system and used the same tape which it originally
  18. claimed was bad.  This worked just fine!  Thus, I came to the conclusion that
  19. the problem was with the tape drive itself.  (Diagnostics says the problem
  20. could be tape, tape drive, or controller.  Not much help.)

  22. Actually, we have another RS/6000 (model 930) which has 2 8mm drives, one of
  23. which displays this same problem and one of which works just fine.  Both of
  24. those are on the same controller.

  26. All evidence would seem to point to the tape drive.  I can even run the same
  27. backup (by name in case you care) on the same tape and with the same drive
  28. over and over again, sometimes it'll work just fine, other times it fails
  29. in different places.

  31. My local IBM office claims IBM has never heard of any problems like this, but
  32. since they have rarely been any help at all (usually they say they'll do
  33. something and then never do - a general IBM trait I've found over the many
  34. years I've worked with them), I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this
  35. problem.  (I'm expecting that someone will say something like, "oh yeah!  That's
  36. a common problem!  You just ... to get around it!")
