- Some people I know are considering an RS/6000 350 as a key part of an
- 8 man development effort. The machine will act as a database server
- running ORACLE and support 2 or 3 people interactively editing,
- compiling, and debugging. I don't know jack about RS/6000's or AIX,
- so I would appreciate any thoughts people have on the following
- questions.
-
- * Do you like AIX for development and administration? Compared to
- SunOS or HP/UX does it have any glaring strengths or weaknesses.
-
- * Are Emacs, GCC, and GDB available for RS/6000?
-
- * Is Centerline-C available?
-
- * Is the 350 a good database server?
-
- * Is AIX a Sys5 or a BSD environment?
-
- * Is it generally easy or difficult to get publicly available software
- (i.e. tcsh, new X clients, etc) to build?
-
- * Is AIX stable? (I hope this is a stupid question, but given Solaris
- 2.0's problems and some stuff I heard about AIX a few years back...)
-
- Thanks,
- Steve
