  18. This won't help you with this move, but I have learned that the only way to
  19. ensure that 3rd party applications (as well as PD stuff) can be moved with
  20. ease is if they are installed in their own subtree, and preferably their own
  21. filesystem/disk.  With this configuration I was able to easily move my external
  22. disks containing my /depot and /home areas to my new machine last summer.  I
  23. just hooked them up and imported the volume groups.  It pays to plan ahead...

  25. If you don't have that option, make a backup of the entire disk.  You could
  26. then try to extract the application files onto the new machine.  Even better
  27. would be to install from scratch and put all your 3rd party stuff under
  28. /usr/apps or something to avoid this problem in the future.  Your important
  29. configuration files will still be on the tape so you could extract them and
  30. then place them in their new locations.
