- If anyone has seen this problem (see below), or has any
- suggestions that might help me find a solution, please send info
- via Email. I will be grateful for any information you can send.
-
- Thanks in advance to everyone who responds.

- Problem Description:
-
- The system locks-up 1 or more times each day. The only fix is
- a hard reboot.
-
- Info:
-
- 1) A network analyzer was used to monitor the network traffic for
- several days. Nothing was found except for some boot request
- broadcasts from a network router. This was eliminated as a
- cause when the RS/6000 was disconnected from the network and
- it still locked up. (The system is currently the only one
- on the subnet, there is a router between it and the rest of
- the world)
- 2) bootpd, snmpd, and the X-Station manager daemon were stopped,
- this didn't help.
- 3) The facilities engineers have assured me that it is not a
- power problem because the system is on UPS which conditions
- the power. Even so, I have requested a dranetz monitor to
- verify that the power is ok. (It was just connected, so
- no info yet)
- 4) Yes, I took a DUMP. It seems that the system hardware locks
- up to the point that it does not recognize that the key has
- been turned to service. When I turn the key to service and
- press reset, I get a 100 on the LED. A second press of the
- reset causes a reboot.
- 5) As for software applications, the system locks up even when
- there are no users logged in, including after a fresh reboot
- and no user process started.
- 6) I have worked with UNIX systems for about 5 years, but this
- is my first AIX box. She is 6 weeks old, I have pictures
- if you would like to see them.
-
- Hardware Configuration:
-
- PowerStation 560 (AIX 3.2)
- 4x64MB HD3 memory
- 2 Ethernet LAN adapters
- 2 Internal SCSI I/O Controllers
- 5 1GB Disk Drives
- 1 External SCSI I/O Controller
- Deskside Expansion Unit (9334-500)
- 3 1.37GB Disk Drives
- 1 Color graphics display adapter (19" color monitor)
- 1 Internal CD-ROM
- 1 Internal 2.3GB 8mm Tape
