- Hello. My working group has been charged with developing a plan for
- providing remote workstation system management support, in effect,
- "rent-a-system-manager". Basically, we would provide system management
- services to workstation owners that have no desire to do those functions
- themselves. Services provided would include: 1) Resource Mgt 2) User Mgt
- 3) Standard Admin duties such as TCP, UUCP, security related tasks
- 4) Disaster REcovery - backup and restores 5) Hardware Installation
- 6) Software Installation/Maintenance - OS upgrades, 3rd party installs,
- etc. We have approximately 400 networked workstations on campus and
- anticipate about 40% of them willing to use this service.
-
- I know some commercial and academic sites provide this level of support
- where they have some type of site system mgt group that roams around
- providing system management support for a large number or workstations.
- I would like to hear of the problems/headaches/good things
- we may encounter. We are currently looking to offer support for DEC,
- Sun, IBM and NEXT Unix boxes. Any hints/advice/warnings would be greatly
- appreciated. You can post to the net or send directly to me (I'll
- summarize). Thanks in advance. I can be reached at:
