- Hrm. trying to remember my own days as a jr. admin.
-
- One way to increase or maintain knowledge is by writing little scripts. Give her
- a Unix shellscript book and let her write a few little ones. Think of little
- tasks that it would be nice to have scripts for, and have her write them.
- Nothing really major (yet), just minor things. I remember one of my first
- scripts was a very simple "monitoring" script, to see if any of our Suns had
- rebooted overnight. It consisted, basically, of taking the last 5 lines of
- /var/adm/messages and mailing them to ourselves, and it got put in cron so we had
- mail every morning. After a while of writing simple scripts for tasks at work, I
- was writing my own scripts to do little personal things. (I still am basically a
- script person :)
-
- Step-by-step, looking over her shoulder tasks may be good to get her learning a
- new task, but at some point, you should let her do something like an upgrade or
- software installation by herself.
-
- One of the things with system admin is that you learn more through
- "trial-by-fire" than you do from books (at times).
-
-
- Just my $.02...
