-
- Assuming PC bus machines, I don't understand why one doesn't just use
- typical thinwire-ready boards like WD/SMC/CLONES. In the non-prime-time
- environment the original poster was discussing, I doubt you can get a
- cheaper network.
-
- There are sub-$100 WD-ether clones available (Don't ask me where, I don't
- use-em), and the cabing can either be a RAD-SHACK item or you can get
- so-called ``lantastic'' cable for cheaps. The wiring is more of a
- hassle than with MP-repeaters, but hey, this is a home setup, right?
-
- I use this setup to network 10-12 machines together in my office, and
- reliability hasn't been a problem. Machines come and leave every
- day, and the network changes constantly. I have a stack of varying
- length thinwire cables that gets recycled as the network changes.
-
- Your N-machine cost is:
-
- N * Cost of each ethernet interface (I use SMC 8013 for compatibility)
- (N-1) * cost of a typical cable segment.
- 2 * terminator cost.
-
- If you scrounge, the last two items should cost almost nothing...
