- Overprinting characters and related elementary text layout features are
- a major deficiency of FrameMaker. Simple overprinting was a feature in
- FrameMaker 1.3 but for inexplicable unwiseness of the design team it was
- removed from version 2 instead of extending it to what is urgently needed
- in many scientific texts: attaching characters with marks such as accent
- marks and even multiple of them. For example, putting one or two tilde (~)
- marks on top of any letter (not restricted to the letter N which happens
- to exist with one tilde), etc. None of the tricks which have been
- discussed in this group is an excuse for the lack of this important basic
- feature since they all are very cumbersome to apply. The spread-trick
- mentioned above, e.g., does not center the character parts - you'll have
- to apply manual justification (select and use Alt-arrow keys) in addition
- for horizontal centering as well as vertical adjustment. Horrible!
- I've been complaining at comments@frame.com more than once but they
- apparently prefer to enrich FrameMaker with big features that are more
- likely to look impressive from a public-relations point of view than these
- basic things.
