  24. There is an other approach called Scientific Word by TCI on the marked.
  25. I just tested the 1.0-Version:

  27. - needs 386-PC and Windows 3.x
  28. - needs about 18 MB Diskspace

  30. Short description:
  31.   Not really WYSIWYG (which is not possible with TeX on a 386-PC at all)
  32.   But a comfortable Editor which hides (nearly) all TeX-syntax and
  33.   gives a good idea whow the output might look. The logical structure,
  34.   text attributes and formulas are clearly readable.
  35.   (headings are large, bold face, \tt, \sc and math typing is shown
  36.   in the corresponding font, labels and cross-references are viible)
  37.   !! Very good Math-editor, mouse-orientated, you see quite exactly what
  38.      you will get, immediately after each input command.
  39.      (in fact it ist the same math-editor as in AMI-PRO by Lotus,
  40.       but about 10-times quicker... Sci-Word selled it to Lotus)
  41.   The editor produces LaTeX-output which is acceptet by any LaTeX-
  42.   installation if you include a file TCILATEX.TEX. The program reads
  43.   LaTeX-files converts the to C++ objects in the Editor and writes
  44.   LaTeX-files again.
  45.   The TeX and Preview programms post-processing the editor-output
  46.   are somwath slow due to Windows and not too komfortable I think.
  47.   but for them any other Windows-version might be taken.

  49. My opinion:
  50.   + Easy to start for people having no idea about TeX
  51.   + Great Formular-part
  52.   + Good for standart applications (if you dont want to use all the
  53.     (power of TeX, defining own commands and layouts)
  54.   + Spell-checker
  55.   - Somewhat buggy yet, especially if you want to load TeX-files
  56.     not created with Sci-Word
  57.   - For some important things like tabular, footnotes ... you have
  58.     to open a TeX-box and enter the usual TeX-code. No WYSIWYG-display
  59.     for this part (it is said that version 2.0 coming up early next year
  60.     has tables implemented)
  61.   - German Styles and hyphenation not yet available (with version 2.0)
  62.   - Difficult to implement your own STYLE-files, put possible if you
  63.     have a good knowledge of TeX.
  64.   - It is possible to produce TeX-output which cause error messages
  65.     of TeX... Than you have to know enough about TeX to find the error.
  66.   - Grafic implementation printer-dependant (PCL for HP-Laserjet
  67.     or EPS for Postscript-Printers)
  68.   - Expensive (twice the price of AMI-Pro, approx. 1300.- DM (700$ ?))

  70. Resumee:
  71. - Good for secretary use if there is allways a TeX-Guru at hand.
  72. - Good to type Math and export single formulas to other TeX-files
  73.   (But that is also possible with AMI-Pro)
  74. - Don't think you can just take a TeX-File of site X and load it
  75.   into SCI-Word (Too buggy yet), but you can create LaTeX-output
  76.   for other sites very easy if you olny want to do standart things
  77.   like Text, List, Bibliography, Index, and FORMULAS!!
  78. - Interesting devellopment, migth become a good program if devellopment
  79.   and support goes on.
