- This might be somewhat misleading. Neither the SS2 nor the SS 10
- supports a "thick" RG-8 coaxial cable connection. Neither do they
- support a "thin" RG-58 coaxial cable. You need a transceiver to
- tie into either a Thick net or a Thin net cable, but neither Sparc
- has a built-in ethernet transceiver. In fact, it seems the days
- of ethernet on coaxial cable are drawing to a close. [I, for one,
- will not mourn it's passing.]
-
- The SS2 has an AUI port - a 15-pin D connector which plugs into an
- external ethernet transceiver. This is the traditional, old-style
- sliding-latch ethernet connector for which Sun has taken a lot of
- abuse over the years (because of conector reliability problems.)
-
- The SS10 combines audio and ethernet AUI onto a single connector,
- but a custom cable is needed to split out the AUI pins to a true
- 15-pin AUI connector. Sun sells an appropriate cable, but it does
- not come with the SS10 automatically. (Several people have posted
- about this not-well-documented subtlety, and how they got "burned"
- by it.) So take heed: if you need the AUI connector on an SS10,
- you *must* order the breakout cable explicitly.
-
- The SS10 *does* have a built-in 10baseT ethernet connector, which
- the SS2 does not have.
