Or buy the older machines, which already run 4.1.x...........
It's a really simple buying decision... If you need 4.1.x, buy an IPC/ELC/IPX/SS2
or SS10/20 or SS10/30....
If your applications run on Solaris 2.x, then you can buy a Classic or and LX...
Maybe you should ask your application suppliers to hurry up with their porting
so you can make use of the new low cost machines.... And if they give you enormous
lead times, ask *them* why they are making *you* pay more for *their* applications
(albeit indirectly in the hardware cost). It's not as if (a) Solaris 2.x is unavailable or (b) that no development tools exist.... and it's not as if they never had any warning that Solaris 2.x was coming... they've only had what 2 years of "SunOS 5.0 is coming and here is what you should be doing now to be ready for it..."
Don't ask Sun why they aren't supporting SunOS 4.x on the LX and Classic.
Ask application vendors why they haven't ported their applications to Solaris 2.x.
