  14. We are running a SUN3/160 system. We would like to
  15. expand memory from 8 to 16 MB.

  17. current (running) configuration:

  19. Backplane:                       ( 501 105 301 048 )
  20. slot  1: 3/160 CPU with 4 MB     ( 501 116 403 788 )
  21. slot  2: 1st 4 MB Sun Mem Exp    ( 501 113 211 495 )
  22. slot  9: SMD Controller          ( 501 116 604 733 )
  23. slot 11: Sun VME SCSI Controller ( 501 123 608 008 )

  25. Following SUN document `cardcage slot assignments and backplane
  26. configuration procedures' first memory expansion should be
  27. placed in slot 5. When trying this CPU will recognize only 4 MB.

  29. 2nd and 3rd memory expansions are never found.

  31. To ensure that memory is working we tested each board as
  32. 1st expansion in slot 2.

  34. Each memory is configured following SUN document `Memory Board
  35. Configuration Procedure'

  37. EEPROM parameters were changed according to new configuration.

  39. Does anybody have any advice or hints ?

  41. Can anybody help us to get answers to following questions
  42.  
  43. - how is the SUN memory bus organized, is there a slot dependend
  44.   addressing of boards ? (If not we probably have a broken backplane)
  45.  
  46. - our PROM Monitor ( compiled 5/22/89 ) has only extended selftest
  47.   for keyboard, ethernet and seriell ports. It seems strange that
  48.   there is no memory test.
  49.  
  50. - should there be any termination of the memory bus ? How could this be
  51.   achieved ?

  53. - does anybody have something like a SUN part number listing to verify that
  54.   we have parts which will work together ?
  55.  
  56. - Does anybody know where to get further hardware documentation
  57.   ( CPU board, FPA installation, etc. .. )
  58.  
  59. - I noticed three empty sockets on the CPU board near the memory
  60.   and the P3 connector. They are labeled with P2/110, 9518, AL5254.
  61.   Does anybody know about their purpose ?
